Owning a pride:
Only males may claim pridelands, and they do so by going to an empty pride and announce their new territory (usually by scent marking or roaring). From then on in they are in full charge of protecting their land and gaining members for it.
Also, a pride can also be gained by challenging a King for his territory. See fighting rules.
Getting Claimed:
Females can get claimed by a King by going into the Claiming Path and wait for a leader to claim them. Once they are claim, they are part of that pride, like it or not. If you wish to pick what pride you want to be part of, it's best to go into that particular pride and ask the leader to accept you. Once a female is part of a pride, she cannot leave without the King or Queen's permission.
Males getting into prides:
If a lion does not wish to own his own pride, he can go to the Claiming Path with the lionesses and wait for a King to offer him a position in the pride. Unlike females, male lions get to choose who they wish to go with, and can leave whenever it suits them.
Cubs getting into prides:
A loner cub gets into a pride by going to the Claiming path and waiting for a King or Queen to claim him/her. Like lionesses, loner cubs have no choice who claims them, regardless of gender, and can only leave when given permission by the King or Queen. Cubs who accompany mothers or guardians into the Claiming Path get to go into whichever pride their guardians get into, regardless of what the King wants. If the guardian were to leave the pride, the cub can also go with him/her.
